Emmy-winning actress Rue McClanahan, best known for portraying Blanche on the long-running TV series The Golden Girls, died today in New York. She was 76.
McClanahan’s portrayal of Blance Devereaux, an at times over-the-top, sexual Southern spinster, was both inspirational and entertaining throughout the Golden Girls run. Due to the character’s embrace of the single life and pride in her womanhood, Blanche seems a forerunner to Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones, portrayed by Kim Cattrall.
McClanahan originally made a name for herself in the 1960s, as she appeared in numerous Broadway productions. She effortlessly transitioned to television in the next decade, as she was Beatrice Arthur’s best friend on Maude, until that series ended in 1978.
